The Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, Nyack, New York. Hopper was born in 1882 and his boyhood home was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. It is now operated as the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center.
On the top floor of this incredible time capsule is the bedroom where Hopper grew up and started painting. Hopper spent the first 28 years of his life in the house and continued to visit his family here throughout his lifetime.
In the foyer of the Hopper House reproductions of many of his works are displayed, along with a screen playing a documentary and interview with Hopper. Displayed on the screen is Automat, painted in 1927 by Hopper. The painting was first displayed on Valentine's Day 1927 at the opening of Hopper's second solo show, at the Rehn Galleries in New York City. Today it is owned by the Des Moines Art Center.
In 1930 Hopper, by now married to Josephine Nivison, rented a cottage in South Truro, Cape Cod. The couple returned every summer for the rest of their lives, building a summer house there in 1934. The landscapes and buildings of the area served as subjects for Hopper's work - "I was more interested in the sunlight on the buildings and on the figures than any symbolism." Two of his barn paintings were chosen for President Obama's office.
"Maybe I am not very human - what I wanted to do was to paint sunlight on the side of a house. ” - Edward Hopper
"Throughout his career, Hopper was fascinated by dramatic lighting and nowhere is this more evident than in his nighttime pictures, where brightly lit interiors contrast with the darkness outside. Glowing fluorescent or electrical lights, which illuminate windows and spill onto otherwise darkened street, set the tone for many of Hopper's paintings and imbue the works with an air of mystery."- Biography in National Gallery of Art, New York
"Emptiness and silence pervade Hopper's scenes. New Yorkers find themselves alone in the supposed privacy of their homes and hotel rooms, but also in the public realm of restaurants, lobbies, theaters, and the street." - Biography in National Gallery of Art, New York
"Aloneness is his (Hopper's) great theme, symbolizing America: insecure selfhoods in a country that is only abstractly a nation." - The New Yorker
"Hopper used to grumble that those who talked about his paintings overdid ‘the loneliness thing.’ Nonetheless, his best pictures seem to depict the experience of isolation: Hopper’s people are lost within themselves even when they are in the presence of others." - Peter Fuller
"Edward Hopper belongs to a particular category of artist whose work appears sad but does not make us sad – the painterly counterpart to Bach or Leonard Cohen." - Alain de Botton

These pictures were taken over 48 hours on October 3 and 4 1993 in Mogadishu, Somalia. They follow an attempt by American Rangers and Delta Force troops to capture Somali factional leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. Civilians became involved in the fighting between American troops and Somali militia loyal to Aidid. The story of these two days formed the basis of Blackhawk Down directed by Ridley Scott.
During the battle two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and three others damaged. Some of the American soldiers managed to return to their compound but others, trapped at their crash site, were killed.
Somali casualty figures are disputed. American estimates are that between 1,000 and 1,500 Somali militia and civilians were killed, and another 3,000 – 4,000 injured. The International Red Cross estimated 200 Somalis killed and several hundred wounded. 19 American soldiers were killed and 73 wounded.
